UNIHUBS Multiplier Workshop: Advancing Digital Skills and Innovation in African HEIs

Kibabii University has been implementing European Union (Erasmus + Programme) funded Fostering Innovation in African HEIs to enhance their Relevance for the Digital Innovation Labour Market (UNIHUBS) Project since 1st July 2024. The project aims to build inclusive, digitally driven education systems that enhance graduate employability and foster regional innovation. It helps foster international cooperation between Universities and Innovation Hubs of sub-Saharan Africa (Tanzania, Ghana and Kenya) and Europe (the Netherlands and Greece) to enhance African Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) relevance for labor market needs and improve the employability of their students.

The project, as one of its milestones, carried out a thorough needs analysis in the three Africa countries that revealed the following training gaps in digital innovation and entrepreneurship in HEIs:

  1. Digital Pedagogy – Educators need training in designing and delivering engaging digital content.
  2. Entrepreneurship Education – Faculty require skills in innovation pedagogy and project-based learning.
  • Technical Digital Skills – Coding, data analytics, and cyber security.
  1. Human Skills – Communication, teamwork, and leadership etc.
  2. Collaboration & Partnership – Skills in co-creation and public-private engagement.

On 6th November 2025, the project organized for a one-day intensive Multiplier Workshop at Rockwel Hotel, in Kisumu City under the theme; Innovative Teaching, Co-Creation, and Digital Skills for HEI–DIH Collaboration. The Local Multiplier Training Workshop trained a total of ten (10) academic staff, as well as digital innovation professionals (trainees), on innovative educational approaches and practices in addressing in the five (5) areas above. The training was facilitated by a team of three (3) KIBU project team members and DIH professionals that trained during the International Training Mobility in Rotterdam, Netherlands using UNIHUBS Toolkit.

The Local Multiplier workshop was a capacity building workshop for HEIs and DIHs in preparation for eventual co-creation of a major open online course that will help bridge the HEIs training and the market needs in Africa.
